An aquatics certification program piloted last year has been expanded to all North Delta high schools.
In the 2023/24 school year, the Delta School District in partnership with the City of Delta piloted the program with a single cohort of 24 students.
Of those, 20 successfully completed the certification, and in doing so fulfilled the necessary prerequisites to become eligible for employment as an aquatics instructor. As well, each each student by the end was very close to completing their lifeguard certification and thus eligible to apply to work as a lifeguard in Delta.
In addition, each student will be very close to completing the lifeguard certification and will be eligible to apply as a lifeguard in Delta.
Building on that success, the program has been expanded to all five secondary schools in North Delta for the 2024/25 school year.
The program is taking place at Sungod Recreation Centre from now until June 2025, with students taking their Bronze Medallion, Bronze Cross, Swim and Life Saving Instructor, and Standard First Aid certifications.
As well, students in the program are receiving Active Living 11 or 12 course credits.
