Several local Filipino organizations are hosting a vigil in Surrey on Wednesday evening to honour the victims of the Lapu-Lapu Day Festival.

Eleven people, aged five to 65, were killed on Saturday, April 26, and more than two dozen others injured when a man drove an SUV into a crowd of people celebrating the Filipino festival, near Fraser Street on East 43rd Avenue. Kai-Ji Adam Lo, 30, was charged with eight counts of second-degree murder on Sunday (April 27), the day after the fatal attack. He was arrested at the scene and remains in custody.

Lapu Lapu Day is an annual celebration by the Filipino community to honour Indigenous resistance fighter Datu Lapu-Lapu, who defeated Spanish forces led by Ferdinand Magellan in the 16th century.

The organizations Anakbayan BC & Surrey, Migrante BC, Canada-Philippines Solidarity for Human Rights, and Gabriela BC are hosting a vigil at Holland Park (13428 Old Yale Road) from 6-9 p.m.

"All are welcome. Let us come together in light, love, and unity," organizers said in a post on Instagram. "Please feel free to bring your own flowers and candles."

Our Lady of Good Counsel Church held a similar vigil on April 27.
