Delta police are again appealing for help from the public to locate a missing Surrey man who was reportedly driving a car that was abandoned on Alex Fraser Bridge the evening of Dec. 4.
At around 5:40 p.m., police say a grey 2023 Volkswagen Taos SUV stopped in the southbound curb lane of the bridge, obstructing traffic during the foggy afternoon commute, and the driver, a 46-year-old Surrey man named Avtar, got out of the car. He has still not been located.
“The Delta Police Department is renewing its appeal for witnesses to assist in determining what happened to Avtar. We know traffic was impacted almost immediately by the stopped vehicle, yet it wasn’t reported as abandoned for nearly 20 minutes. There are witnesses, and even the smallest piece of information could be crucial to our investigation," Acting Insp. James Sandberg, public affairs manager for the DPD, said in a press release.
"We are urging anyone who was travelling southbound on the Alex Fraser Bridge at approximately 5:40 p.m. and saw the stopped car in the lane or observed the driver near the vehicle to come forward. This includes a cyclist who was on the southbound (west) sidewalk at that time.”
Avtar is described as 5’11” tall, weighing 230 lbs, with short black hair, a short black beard, black-rimmed glasses, and possibly wearing a light grey toque, a black winter jacket without a hood and dark-coloured pants. Avtar also has a tattoo on the back of his right hand.
Anyone with information about Avtar's whereabouts or about the vehicle's abandonment, or who has dash camera footage shot on the bridge from about 5:40 p.m. to 6:20 p.m. is asked to call the Delta Police Department at 604-946-4411 and quote file number 2024-22861.
