Two Delta men are charged with auto theft after the Integrated Municipal Provincial Auto Crime Team (IMPACT) recovered 29 stolen vehicles valued at $2.5 million.
Sgt. Vanessa Munn said IMPACT in February began investigating a series of auto thefts involving newer model trucks and SUVs, including Range Rovers and Toyota Tundras, stolen from throughout the Lower Mainland. On May 22 two suspects were arrested in Surrey. Mohamed Wael Ozor, 29, and Omar Wael Ozor, 20, are each charged with 14 criminal offences including theft of motor vehicle over $5000, possession of stolen property and trafficking in stolen property.
Munn said that with help from the Vancouver Police, Delta Police, Langley RCMP and Canada Border Services Agency, IMPACT intercepted shipping containers containing stolen vehicles at B.C. ports facilities.
“New vehicle owners sometimes assume that built-in, anti-theft mechanisms and new technology means their vehicle is less likely to be stolen,” said Eugene Lum, acting officer in charge of IMPACT. “The reality is criminals can use technology to find and exploit weaknesses of specific, newer vehicles and steal them without a key fob.”
