Work will begin this summer on expanding a parking lot in Delta's "civic precinct," adding 70 spaces to relieve pressure caused by constuction at Delta Hospital.

The City of Delta is set to begin construction on a parking lot expansion adjacent to City Hall.

In a press release Thursday morning (June 12), the city said the project will "support critical health care and public safety services in the Civic Precinct," including at City Hall, the Ladner Leisure Centre and the Douglas J. Husband Discovery Centre.

"Recent construction on the grounds of Delta Hospital has resulted in the loss of parking spots for hospital staff, which is causing additional congestion for members of public looking to utilize services in the area," the release states.

The additional 70-odd spaces will relieve growing pressure on parking availability, supporting hospital patients, critical health-care staff and the Delta Police Department, the release notes, while also ensuring public access to services in the Civic Precinct.

The new parking lot is expected to cost $1.4 million, including contingencies.

Work will begin this summer "following tax season" and conclude in the fall.
