The Delta Chamber of Commerce has announced the finalists for this year’s Business Excellence Awards.

Since 1951, the Delta Chamber of Commerce has recognized outstanding business persons and organizations in the federal riding of Delta (including the city of Delta and Tsawwassen First Nation) at the Business Excellence Awards Gala (formerly the Hats Off to Excellence Awards).

Honourees are chosen based on the criteria of professional accomplishments, leadership, initiative and community involvement. Finalists will be honoured and winners will be celebrated at the 73rd annual gala, presented by the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority, on Friday, Oct. 18 at Tsawwassen Springs.

This year’s awards will be handed out in eight categories: Rising Star Business, Small Business of the Year, Medium Business of the Year, Large Business of the Year, Sustainability Award, Charitable or Non-Profit Organization of the Year, Business of the Year and Business Leadership Award.

The Rising Star Business award recognizes a newly-founded (one- to three-year-old) independent for-profit business that has demonstrated operational success and growth while maintaining a positive work environment and a strong community commitment.

Finalists for the Rising Star Business award are Bar Down Cookies, Clean Slate Skin Bar, and Rat Rod’s Dogs.

The Small, Medium and Large Business of the Year awards recognize for-profit businesses that have strong and continuous growth, have established new technology or have broken into a new market while demonstrating a positive work environment, strong growth potential and a commitment to the Delta community.

This year's finalists for Small Business of the Year (1-10 employees) area Camille’s Boutique & Gallery, Fluevog Films, and Vacuum Works Plus.

Finalists for Medium Business of the Year (11-39 employees) area Double R Rentals, Good Hound Training & Daycare, and TAK Logistics Ltd.

For Large Business of the Year (40+ employees), the finalists are Alpine Building Maintenance Inc., Coast Tsawwassen Inn, and Symbiosis Pediatric Therapy Inc.

Business of the Year recognizes a for-profit business nominated in one of the above four categories that has seen strong and continuous growth, is a leader in its industry, has established new technologies or has broken into a new market while serving as an inspiration and a role model to other businesses by demonstrating a positive work environment, strong growth potential and a commitment to the Delta community.

Finalists for Business of the Year are Neighbourhood Plumbing & Heating, Paragon Electrical Installations Ltd., and Spray Wipe Clean.

New this year, the Sustainability Award recognizes a for-profit business with an outstanding commitment to environmental sustainability that has tangibly reduced its environmental impacts through improved processes, implementation of technologies, reduction of energy/waste and/or other practices. Businesses must demonstrate community leadership, be a proponent of sustainable business practices and be a positive influence for other businesses.

Sustainability Award finalists area Contact Environmental, Labatt Breweries, and SIPCO Innovations.

Another new award, Charitable/Non-Profit Organization of the Year, recognizes a registered “Delta”-based not-for-profit organization or society that enriches the community through financial, volunteer or project-based contributions to enhance community infrastructure, thereby making Delta a better place to live, work and play.

Charitable/Non-Profit Award finalists are Delta Firefighters Charitable Society, Heron Hospice Society of Delta, and Ladner Business Association.

The Business Leadership Award (which this year replaces Citizen of the Year) recognizes a person in Delta that has demonstrated extraordinary business leadership and made a significant impact to Delta at large. Through their business leadership, this individual has exemplified community engagement, economic development, innovation and social responsibility, ultimately for the benefit of the community, and made a lasting impact in Delta while being a source of inspiration.

The Business Leadership Award recipient will be announced at the Business Excellence Awards Gala on Oct. 18.
