The City of Delta is upgrading three “key” crosswalks to improve pedestrian safety.
The city announced the start of its Neighbourhood Traffic Management and Crosswalks Project on May 7, with enhancements planned at 112th Street and 88th Avenue in North Delta, 62nd Street and Holly Park Drive in Ladner, and 6th Avenue and Milsom Wynd in Tsawwassen.
Upgrades will include street lighting improvements and the installation of updated signage, pavement markings and pedestrian-activated flashing beacons, all to enhance visibility and safety for pedestrians.
“We are dedicated to providing our residents with the infrastructure they need to feel safe and supported in their daily activities,” Mayor George Harvie said in a press release. “By investing in projects like the Neighbourhood Traffic Management and Crosswalks initiative, we are taking proactive steps towards achieving our Vision Zero goals and ensuring the safety of all road users.”
Developed in 2020, Delta’s Vision Zero Strategy aims to reduce fatalities and serious collisions, improve connections to schools and community services, and address needs for older adults and vulnerable road users, according to a city press release.
The city is advising residents that during construction, single-lane alternating traffic will be implemented between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m., and street parking will be restricted within the work zone. Driveway access may also be limited when work is taking place adjacent to homes, with the city warning that, given the nature of the work, some inconvenience is unavoidable.
Construction starts this month and is expected to be complete in June.
“The City of Delta appreciates the patience and co-operation of residents during this period,” reads a press release.
Last month, the city announced cycling and pedestrian improvements for two other North Delta intersections – 116th Street at 75A Avenue, and Nicholson Road at Chateau Wynd – thanks to $412,000 in funding from the B.C. Active Transportation Infrastructure Grants Program.
