The Cloverdale Rec. Centre was evacuated Feb. 11.

Just before 8 p.m. everyone in the building was told to head outside.

“I was in a Pilates class when an announcement asking everyone to evacuate the building came over the PA system,” Surrey resident Michelle Rowell said via email.

“Alarms were not sounded, but a fire truck and a few police vehicles were on site,” she wrote.

The Parks and Recreation Department at the City of Surrey confirmed people were told to leave the building.

“There was a short evacuation on Tuesday night after staff and patrons noticed an odour that made some cough,” Parks and Rec. wrote in a statement.

“A non-emergency call was made and fire and police were dispatched. The source of the odour was not found but first responders believe that an animal repellent may have been sprayed outside the building near a doorway,” the statement said.

“After vacating the facility for roughly 20 minutes, staff and patrons were allowed back in the building where normal operations and service resumed.”
