A concert in Delta scheduled for later this month paying tribute to the revolutionary 1970s sound of jazz legend Miles Davis has been postponed.
Delta-based Lon Schieder Presents was set to bring Electric Miles to Ladner’s Lighthouse Church on Saturday, May 17, however on Thursday (May 1) it was announced that the concert "has been cancelled due to unforeseen medical circumstances."
"Fortunately, this setback is temporary and a new date and time will be forthcoming," reads a statement from the promoter.
Featuring an all-star lineup of talented jazz musicians, Electric Miles “transcends a mere tribute” by using Davis’ mastery as a springboard for their own bold and personalized explorations, according to an earlier press release.
“Electric Miles recreates Miles Davis’ iconic fusion of modern and classic jazz, delivering relentless grooves, fearless improvisation and spontaneous interplay — hallmarks of a defining era in the career of jazz’s best-selling and most influential artist,” the release states.
“From his early days touring with legends Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie to his ever-evolving artistic reinvention, Miles Davis remains one of the most influential American musicians of the 20th century. His groundbreaking work spans multiple genres, including jazz, blues, rock and hip-hop, shaping modern improvisational music in ways that still resonate today.”
Led by Ron Samworth (guitar), the ensemble features Bill Clark on trumpet, Bill Runge on saxophone(s), Brad Turner on keyboard(s), André Lachance on bass, and Bernie Ardagh on drums.
As a “special treat,” bandleader and Capilano University jazz studies instructor Samworth will deliver a pre-concert talk, tracing Miles Davis’ captivating evolution from bebop and cool jazz to modal jazz, modernism and, ultimately, jazz fusion.
Advanced general admission tickets for the now-cancelled two-and-a-half hour show were $35 ($25 for youth under 18) plus service fee.
