Three people are dead and one more in hospital with life-threatening injuries after a semi-truck collided with two other vehicles on the Pattullo Bridge in Surrey late Friday night (Feb. 14).
The Pattullo Bridge was closed overnight for the collision investigation but has reopened as of shortly afternoon on Saturday, Feb. 15.
Police, fire and ambulance services responded to the crash on the east end of the bridge, in the southbound lanes, at about 10:07 p.m. on Friday.
A Black Press freelancer on scene reported that firefighters used the Jaws of Life to reach people trapped in one of the vehicles.
Both Surrey Fire Service and BC Emergency Health Services personnel administered lifesaving measures to three people at the scene, but all three died at the scene, a Surrey Police Service press release reports.
An occupant of one of the two passenger vehicles was also taken to hospital for treatment of life-threatening injuries; police did not yet have an update on the extent of that person's injuries.
The driver of the semi-truck was unhurt and remained at the scene, police say.
"Both the Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service (ICARS) and the RCMP Surrey Provincial Operations Support Unit Criminal Collision Investigation Team (CCIT) have been called in to assist," SPS Staff Sgt. Lindsey Houghton reports in a press release. "The investigation is in its early stages and the cause of the collision is unknown."
