Underwater creature catching eyes at South Surrey shopping centre

Sand sculpture created by artist Craig Mutch on display till Sept. 2

There's a strange creature making waves in Semiahmoo Shopping Centre this month.

Rising from the depths of sculptor Craig Mutch's imagination, its lair is "nestled" in the northeast span of the 1701 152 St. galleria, its multi-tasking tentacles entangling a scuba diver while carefully guarding a chest of grainy treasure.

"It's fantastic and customers love it," shopping centre marketing director Jeri Cox said, of the underwater display revealed by Mutch earlier this month.

Last year, Mutch added a temporary beachy feel to the centre by way of an eight-foot-tall sandcastle.

This year's sculpture, titled Sea for Yourself, is to remain for all to 'sea' until Sept. 2. Those who hook a selfie with the creature and share the image on social media with #seaitatsemi – tagging the shopping centre in the post – have a shot at a $100 shopping centre gift card. The winner is to be drawn at random after 5 p.m. on Sept. 2.
