A 12-day trash-collection effort in Surrey yielded 1,217 dumped items and 682 bags of litter, adding to a mountain of stuff brought in last spring.
Surrey's "summer clean-up blitz," Aug. 19-30, led to "a notable improvement in the cleanliness of the city’s streets and public spaces," according to a city hall news release that details the haul.
Crews collected 329 pieces of furniture, 61 mattresses, 106 appliances/electronics, 23 shopping carts and 123 containers of oil and other hazardous materials.
Combined with a spring clean-up blitz, 3,170 items and 2,627 bags of litter have been removed from Surrey streets in 2024, city hall officials say.
Until Sept. 25, residents can take advantage of the city's free waste drop-off program at Metro Vancouver’s Central Surrey and North Surrey Recycling and Waste Centres. Also offered is free curbside pickup for large items year-round. Visit surrey.ca/rethinkwaste for details.
Such initiatives "are clearly making a positive difference," stated Surrey Mayor Brenda Locke. "We encourage everyone to continue supporting our clean-up efforts to help us keep Surrey clean, safe, and beautiful.”
