South Surrey high school helps Grade 7s get involved in basketball

Earl Marriott Secondary holding new hoops skills camps for Grade 6-7 students this spring

Earl Marriott Secondary has always been welcoming of elementary students from the area's schools — especially when it comes to basketball.

In addition to hosting Grade 7 basketball championships each year, the school is adding a new skill development camp that will be run by junior and senior EMS student athletes and coaches, EMS athletic director Russ Heggie shared.

Grade 7 champions at this year's tournament were White Rock Elementary (girls), and Laronde Elementary (boys).

"We use these events to help welcome future Mariners and their families, sharing the school culture and traditions that they can expect to soon be a part of," Heggie noted.

With this spring's camps, "we are thrilled to offer another excellent opportunity for future Mariners to be active and develop new skills, making positive connections with current Mariners and other future students of Earl Marriott Secondary!" he said.

The new basketball skill development sessions will be offered in EMS' main gym for Grade 6-7 students, and will run for eight weeks.
