A well-known lacrosse legend will be honoured at an upcoming two-day event in White Rock.

Centennial Arena is set to host the Randy Ellis Lacrosse Days event this Friday and Saturday, April 4-5, an annual event held to celebrate local youth, sport and community.

"They do this every year to kick-start the lacrosse season and to introduce kids to the game of lacrosse," Tracey Ellis explained, sharing that Randy passed away unexpectedly in 2019. He was beloved by the local sports community, being involved with White Rock South Surrey Titans minor football as well as Semiahmoo Lacrosse.

"(Semiahmoo Lacrosse) changed (the tournament) to Randy Ellis Days because he put so much into the game for so many years, and affected so many kids on so many levels, so it's to honour him."

Randy was a former Semiahmoo Lacrosse president and coached many local young athletes over the years, Ellis said, adding that more than 700 people came to his funeral. He was known as a passionate advocate for youth and tireless coach, mentoring and supporting countless young people.

The event kicks off Friday evening (April 4), with games for U7, U9, and U11 teams from 5-8 p.m. On Saturday, the action continues with games for all other levels, starting at 9 a.m. and running throughout the day.

A special highlight of the event will be the Saturday  junior-level match-up between Langley Thunder and New Westminster Salmonbellies, she said.

"They do a tribute to Randy at the game," Ellis said.

A beer garden opens at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday as well.

"Let’s come together as a community to celebrate the spirit of lacrosse and honour Randy Ellis’s dedication to this beloved sport."

Tickets are available at the door.
