Earl Marriott students curl their way to zone championship win

Peace Arch Curling Club hosts successful sturling bonspiel

Local curlers of all ages have been busy in White Rock.

Peace Arch Curling Club, which runs an active school program to introduce youth to the game, recently held a successful sturling bonspiel and celebrated a local high school team who won a zone championship.

The White Rock club hosted a one-day sturling bonspiel Jan. 25 — played by two-person teams who deliver only six rocks each, not the usual eight rocks delivered by players in the four-person game — making it a quick game that takes only an hour to play; ideal for those with a busy schedule, noted a PACC release.

Curlers who have mobility issues enjoy sturling because, while the rock may be delivered with the traditional slide, rocks are more commonly delivered using a stick. Additionally, sweeping is limited, making this a less physically demanding game.

That same weekend, a team of students from Earl Marriott Secondary School, coached at PACC by Ed Holland, competed in and won the South Fraser zone playoffs. The high school team now qualifies to play in the upcoming provincial championships in Kimberley.

“This will be an expensive trip for our team,” Holland said, adding they're hopeful for sponsorship and funding to help with the cost.
