Surrey council will consider $17.3 million in road-improvement contracts Monday (Jan. 13) with goals of addressing "the growing demands of Surrey’s transportation network and improve overall road safety for drivers and pedestrians alike."

More than half of the budgeted amount ($9.2 million) is for the "crucial" first phase of 132 Street widening from 72 to 76 avenues, from two lanes to four lanes, in an effort to improve traffic flow on the increasingly congested corridor.

Construction could begin this month, subject to council approval, and be completed late this year, according to a post on the city's website (surrey.ca).

132 Street is one of the city’s busiest corridors, notes a news release from city hall, "and this contract represents the first phase of a multi-phased program for congestion relief and to support growth in Newton. Subsequent phases for widening between 76 Avenue and 84 Avenue will be undertaken."

Funding was approved in Surrey's 2025 transportation budget for 132 Street widening and other projects including $5.2 million for "Major Road Network Paving" at more than a dozen sites in Surrey, several on King George Boulevard. The sites are listed in the city's news release.

Mayor Brenda Locke says the widening of 132 Street, along with all that paving, "is vital as we prepare to accommodate Surrey's growing population, which is projected to reach one million people in the next two decades," she stated.

"These improvements are not just about improving traffic flow, they are essential for enhancing safety, connectivity, and overall quality of life for our residents. These investments are part of the $300M that Council has approved to enhance and upgrade our road network over four years to lay the groundwork for a more efficient and accessible transportation system.”

The work on 132 Street "will mark a significant step forward for Newton," according to Coun. Harry Bains, chair of Surrey's Focus Newton task force.
