Surrey’s Re-enactors to be city’s first-ever ‘performing artists in residence’

Surrey’s Re-enactors are the city’s first-ever “performing artists in residence.”

The city announced April 1 the program will run out of the Clayton Community Centre.

Surrey Mayor Brenda Locke said, in a press release, she was “excited” to announce the inaugural edition of the new program.

“This initiative not only showcases our vibrant heritage, but also invites the community to engage directly with the creative process,” Mayor Locke said. “We encourage everyone to join us in celebrating the arts and our city's rich history as we bring the past to life together." 

The inaugural residency will feature the Re-enactors. The historical troupe are award-winning heritage reenactment performers. The Re-enactors visit events all over the city during the year and bring the city’s long and storied history to life. The actors portray real historical figures from Surrey’s past.

The city is running a series of free drop-in events at the Clayton Community Centre from April 9-16. During the sessions, the general public is invited to watch the the Re-enactors rehearse and to offer them feedback on their performances.

“Visitors will be able to watch open studio sessions where actors will rehearse, learn roles and perfect their craft,” notes the release.

Public drop in times include: April 9, from 3:45 - 4:45 p.m. (performing arts studio) and April 10, from 3:45 - 4:45 p.m. (visual arts studio ). The public can also watch an open dress rehearsal on April 16 from 3:30 - 4:30 p.m. (performing arts studio).
