Toronto-based indie rock collective Broken Social Scene will headline Surrey’s Canada Day party this summer, with Crown Lands, Neon Dreams and other bands also hitting the stage in Cloverdale.

Admission is free during the daylong celebration July 1 at Bill Reid Millennium Amphitheatre.

Food trucks, amusement rides, a Tavern with beer and wine, a kid’s zone, dance performances and other attractions are part of the annual event, which starts at 10 a.m. and ends with fireworks before 10:30 p.m.

It’s all billed as the largest Canada Day event in Western Canada.

The 2023 music headliners were announced Friday (May 19) by event planners with the City of Surrey.

Since 1999, Broken Social Scene’s flexible lineup has featured as many as 19 musicians joining band founders Kevin Drew and Brendan Canning. A “baroque pop” sound was amplified by the addition of others along the way, including members of Metric, Feist, Stars and Do Make Say Think.

From Oshawa, Ontario, rock duo Crown Lands features vocalist/drummer Cody Bowles with Kevin Comeau on guitar, bass and keyboards. They won 2021 JUNO awards for Breakthrough Group of the Year and Best Rock Album.

Also JUNO award winners, Neon Dreams play dance-y, uplifting songs including the reggae-pop number “This Is It.”

Surrey’s Canada Day event also includes Indigenous cultural sharing on the Siam Stage and family entertainment, with details on surreycanadaday.ca.

The website includes an “Anti-Racism Commitment” by event organizers who say they’re “dedicated to working with and learning from partners, exhibitors, vendors and festival stakeholders to dismantle systemic racism, while specifically supporting Black, Indigenous and People of Colour (BIPOC) to create a safe and inclusive event.”
