• The History and Future of Pride: June 3, 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.; via Zoom; Hosted by Fraser Valley Regional Library. FVRL is excited to welcome award-winning author Robin Stevenson for a virtual Pride Month program. For LGBTQ+ people and their supporters, Pride events are an opportunity to honour the past, protest injustice and celebrate a diverse community. The high point of Pride, the Pride Parade, is spectacular and colourful, but there is a lot more to Pride than rainbow flags and amazing outfits. In this engaging and interactive presentation, Stevenson will talk about the history of the LGBTQ+ movement, the challenges still faced by LGBTQ+ people and communities today, and the important work being done by activists to carry Pride forward into the future. Using images and and anecdotes from the book, Stevenson will share historical photographs, stories of contemporary teens and pictures from Pride celebrations around the world. • Kid Activists — Find Your Voice, Change the World: June 8, 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.; via Zoom; Hosted by Fraser Valley Regional Library. Drawing on the book Kid Activists: True Tales of Childhood from Champions of Change, this presentation focuses on activism. The book’s award-winning author, Robin Stevenson, will share art from the book, quotes from activists, and stories that emphasize themes from the book. She will talk about how activists experienced or witnessed injustice, how they learned from role models in their lives, and how their work was fueled by a vision of a better future. Stevenson will emphasize the importance of activism being grounded in hope and in the belief that change is possible and worth fighting for, as well as the idea that there are many different ways to be an activist. She will talk about her writing process, discuss how writing itself can be a form of activism and encourage kids to think about what issues they care about and how they might use their own voices to take action on those issues. • Disaster in the Valley — Floods, Landslides and Atmospheric Rivers: April 20, 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.; via Zoom; Hosted by Fraser Valley Regional Library. FVRL is excited to welcome Dr. Drew Brayshaw of Statlu Environmental Consulting, a Chilliwack-based firm specializing in hydrology and environmental geoscience. The presentation will be focused on the effects of the atmospheric river storms we experienced in November 2021, with a brief explanation of atmospheric rivers and why these ones were so damaging. The presentation will include some images of Sumas flooding and landslides in the Chilliwack River Valley. It will also include some general descriptions of ways to avoid exposure to these hazards. Delta Virtual Triathlon: May 7-15; Ladner Outdoor Pool, various locations; The Delta Virtual Triathlon will be happening May 7-15 and will consist of three components: swimming, biking and running. The swim component is by pre-registration and happening at the Ladner Outdoor Pool, with participants allotted a 30-minute time slot to complete their swim. The bike and run components are to be completed on your own time, any day within the two-week time frame. Registration for the triathlon (ages 8+) and kids triathlon (ages 3-7) is open now and costs $25 per person.
