The 2024 edition of Car Free Day Surrey will return to streets of Newton on Saturday, June 8, for a full day of music, dance performances and more.

Surrey is among four cities in the region to host the annual summer festival, presented by TransLink as a transit-focused event to which travelling by car is not encouraged. Admission is free.

In Newton for a third year, 137 Street will be filled with stages, food trucks, vendors and family-friendly activities from noon to 8 p.m., south of 74 Avenue.

This year, main-stage performers include Latin fusion group Los Duendes, reggae band Gisto and the Grateful Living, Matt Cook-Contois & Eric Severinson, Matt Hermano, hip-hop artist Peak, Rebecca Sichon, Vanessa Mood and Victoria Groff.

Acts in the Kid Zone are Yuki the Juggler, national Yo-Yo champ Terrance Wang and Magical Kingdom Sing & Dance-Along, along with face painting, balloon twisting, bounce house, mini golf and more.

The Dance Stage promises entertainment by Sullivan Heights Dance, Panorama Dance and breakdance battles with DJ A-Slam and Tabletutors.

Philip Aguirre, executive director of Newton Business Improvement Association (BIA), says Car Free Day is a chance to take a step toward “a cleaner, greener future by leaving the car keys behind and embracing the joy of walking, biking and public transit” to the event.

“Investing in transit infrastructure isn’t just about moving people from point A and point B, it’s about building communities, reducing congestion and creating a sustainable future for Newton, Surrey, B.C.”

More festival details are posted on the website carfree.ca/surrey. Car Free Day events are also held in Vancouver, North Vancouver and Port Coquitlam.

“Car Free Day has become one of Metro Vancouver’s most popular summer traditions,” TransLink CEO Kevin Quinn said in a news release. “Whether you’re taking transit, walking, cycling, or rolling to these events, it’s the perfect way to experience your neighbourhood while also taking action against climate change.”

TransLink’s Tripper Planner can help get you to the Surrey festival site, and a free BEST Bike Valet will be located near the stage at 74 Avenue. Consider Modo, ride-share and car-pool options, as parking will be limited.
