Three new exhibitions are opening at the Museum of Surrey.
The big new feature exhibit “Ocean Bound” is opening in the main hall, “Escaping Residential Schools” is opening in the Indigenous Hall, and “Roots of Resilience: The Law Family Legacy,” a new Community Treasurers Exhibit, opens in the Surrey Stories Gallery.
“We are very excited for this year’s strong variety of spring exhibits at the Museum of Surrey,” Lynn Saffery, museum manager, said in a press release. “Our feature exhibit, Ocean Bound, is a fun, interactive journey of discovery.”
He said he was “thrilled” to announce the feature exhibit.
Ocean Bound is a travelling show out of Ithaca, New York’s Sciencenter. Funded in part by the U.S.’s National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association, the exhibit will open May 29.
Museum-goers will learn about watersheds, aquatic animals, and the world’s oceans through both activities and interactive displays. As part of the exhibition, Surrey’s watersheds and waterways will also be highlighted alongside several city-based groups that are helping to keep them healthy.
Saffery noted that Escaping Residential Schools is a “serious look at the impacts of Canada’s residential school system.”
Located in the museum’s Indigenous Hall, Escaping Residential Schools is a travelling exhibit from the Legacy of Hope Foundation. It also opens May 29.
The exhibition is designed to “give a voice” to the students that attended residential schools by sharing personal accounts from family members.
Saffery explained that Roots of Resilience: The Law Family Legacy is an “interesting" story from the community "that is important to all of us.”
Found upstairs in the Surrey Stories Gallery (next to the Indigenous Hall), the Community Treasures exhibit tells the story of the Law family through the personal objects and photographs that they have preserved throughout the years.
Community Treasures exhibitions are shows brought to the museum through public outreach and engagement. According to the Museum of Surrey, “Community Treasures celebrates the stories of Surrey’s people.”
Ocean Bound runs until Sept. 7. Escaping Residential Schools runs until Aug. 24. Roots of Resilience runs until Aug. 27.
