The White Rock Elks awarded three local students with scholarships at a May 12 event.
Continuing their tradition of helping Semiahmoo Peninsula students with ongoing education, the scholarships are “in honour of the club’s two last lifetime members,” Al Pradine and Al Edwards.
The scholarship program began several years ago, with funds donated by Florence Wall and Al Pradine to make the scholarships possible, and the organization has continued the program since, according to Bob O’Keefe, White Rock Elks committee head for charity and fundraising.
“Every year, we solicit and ask for submissions from students in the area for 300-word essays on the importance of volunteering in the community,” he said.

“It’s a great project, it’s very popular – we get quite a number of essays.”
This year, three Semiahmoo Secondary students received the honours, with three $1,000 scholarships awarded to them at the May 12 ceremony: Adiba Chowdhury, Alex Guo and Sonya Chatterjee.
“A thousand dollars seems to help a lot. Life is expensive,” O’Keefe said.
