The on-and-off rain didn’t deter beer enthusiasts Saturday afternoon (Aug. 10) in Cloverdale.

The Clover Valley Beer Festival returned to Bill Reid Millennium Amphitheatre with more than 40 breweries set up and live music throughout the day.

Partial proceeds from the event go towards Twins Cancer Fundraising, a charity that has raised more than $3 million to fight cancer since the Ruscheinski brothers started it nearly 20 years ago.

The “Property Twins” are well-known locally, and organize the Gone Country music festival, Long Table Gala and Rad Santa events in Cloverdale every year.

Saturday in Cloverdale, festival organizers say more than 2,500 people attended the event, which featured more than 86 beers and ciders.

The event’s reigning champ, Yellow Dog Brewery, was crowned Heavyweight Champ and 2019 Best in Fest Winner, as decided by token weight from sampling. The company’s beer will be available on tap at Sammy J’s Grill & Bar in Langley starting in October, for one year.

The People’s Choice award, as decided by onsite voting by festival-goers at the Preston Mobility booth, went to new brewery Camp Beer Co., to open this fall. Their brews will be available at Hawthorne Beer Market & Bistro.

“We feel that it is more beneficial to offer the breweries draught lines as prizes instead of traditional trophies,” said Katrina Frew, festival director, “as it is a win for not only the breweries, but for the establishments hosting, and for all the attendees and beer lovers in the area.”

Clover Valley Beer Festival included four “peripheral” events over three days, plus Saturday’s “main event.” Hawthorne Beer Market & Bistro kicked things off with a “Limited Release Tap Launch” on Thursday, Aug. 8, featuring brews from Moody Ales, Main Street Brewing, Russell Brewing, Fuggles & Warlock and more. Sammy J’s Grill & Bar in Langley kicked off the festival on Friday, Aug. 9 with the #CVBF2019 Official Kick Off Party, with live music by The Rollin’ Trainwreck, and on Saturday morning they hosted a Pregame Brunch, presented by Grimm’s Fine Foods.
