Buckets of rain couldn’t stop North Delta from raising around $8,000 for cancer research last weekend.

The annual North Delta Terry Fox Run took place on Sunday, Sept. 16, with around 200 people coming out to the Sungod Recreation Centre for the event. Organizer Patti Olson said she hasn’t got the final receipts from the bank, but estimated the donations came in around $8,000.

“Which is really great considering it was a horrible day,” she said. “For that number, I thought we did well for money, which was nice.”

Despite the rain, which cleared up slightly once the run was over, the day was a success, Olson said. The pancake and sausage breakfast put on by the Delta firefighters was a hit, and prizes were won by people young and old. Radio announcer Clay St. Thomas gave a speech about his battle with cancer, something that Olson said was “very encouraging.”

This year also saw more kids coming out to the fundraiser, Olson said.

“I noticed more kids this year, which was really great,” she said. “Even though the weather was crappy, more kids came out which was really neat.”

Although less than a week has passed since the run, Olson is already looking towards the future.

“I’m already thinking next year. I’ve got some ideas,” she said. “I’m going to be way more prepared.

“You’d think after 20 years you’d already be prepared, but nope,” she laughed. “I got next year already in mind.”
