The Museum of Surrey is bringing back its popular “Senses” event.
The museum and the City of Surrey’s Accessibility Services Team are co-hosting “Senses - Family Kickoff to Summer” at the museum on June 24.
“Participants can look forward to an array of hands-on fun both indoors and outdoors, with a variety of activities,” Athenas Angulo, Museum of Surrey communications coordinator, wrote in a press release. “Meet our beloved Museum mascot, Raj the Raccoon, enjoy bubble blowing, explore the galleries, indulge in delicious treats from a local food truck and unleash your creativity through exciting craft-making.”
The Museum of Surrey has provided sensory-focused experiences on site since 2019 when they started operating sensory-friendly hours (1o a.m. to noon) on the first Sunday of every month.
During sensory-friendly hours, the museum reduces the lighting and sound levels throughout the building for those sensitive to higher levels of both. The museum also offers noise-cancelling headphones at all times for guests.
Lynn Saffery, museum manager, said he was excited about the upcoming event.
“We believe that everyone in Surrey and beyond should be able to access cultural programs and events,” he said. “This means that we will continue to be free of charge, provide accessibility opportunities, and ensure everyone is welcome.”
