International Bog Day will be celebrated this month during the annual Jog for the Bog in North Delta.
The event, set for the morning of Sunday, July 21, starts in the Planet Ice parking lot and runs along the perimeter of Delta Nature Reserve.
The annual chip-timed 5k and 10k marathon is hosted by Burns Bog Conservation Society.
“This event has been a success for 10+ years and continues to invite athletes, outdoor enthusiasts, families, and friends to participate in our runs/walks/jogs,” the organization says in an event advisory.
The event features “live entertainment, hot pancakes, and breathtaking views,” starting at 8 a.m. at 10389 Nordel Court, Delta.
“Our goal with this event is to raise awareness about Burns Bog and the environmental importance of preserving peatlands. Peatlands cover only 3% of the Earth’s surface, but store more than 10x the amount of carbon compared to tropical rainforests!”

The Jog for the Bog raises money for the society’s education programs and support “ongoing science and research that is being done to protect the bog, and also to prevent any future development, disruption, and loss of this globally unique ecosystem.”
With an early-bird registration deadline now passed, current fees to enter are $45 for 5km and $50 for 10km. Details are posted on burnsbog.org, or call 604-572-0373 to get involved.
