A Cloverdale hockey team will be raising money for the British Columbia Professional Fire Fighter’s Burn Fund on Saturday.

The team of young hockey players will be stationed outside of the Cloverdale Crossing Save-On-Foods (17745 64 Ave.) on Dec. 15, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., hosting a barbecue and collecting donations in firefighter boots and hockey skates.

The team raised just over $5,000 last year for the Burn Fund’s kids camp, and is hoping to break that record this year.

The camp hosts young burn survivors, between the ages of 6 and 18, for one week in July. Campers swim, hike, kayak, raft, water ski and much more, while receiving one-on-one support from counselors who are themselves burn survivors. Doctors, nurses, therapists and professional fire fighters volunteer their time for the camp, and the program covers campers’ travel and accommodation costs.

According to burnfund.org, it costs about $2,900 to send a youth to the camp. The Cloverdale Midget C3 team is trying to send as many kids as they can.

The fundraiser is a community effort, made possible through the volunteering of the team and coach Adam Campbell, and the food and space provided by Cloverdale Crossing Save-On-Foods. If the weather holds out, shoppers will also be able to view a collection of hot rods from the Pacific International Street Rod Association.

If community members are unable to make it on Saturday, but still wish to donate, they can do so by clicking here.
