Delta Police are warning residents of a scam involving phone calls purporting to be from local police services.

In a post on the DPD’s Facebook page says the department has responded to reports from citizens who have received calls from someone impersonating the Delta Police as well as RCMP.

In one case the complainant had received phone calls indicating that her husband had been arrested. The person on the line told them to withdraw $2,300 in order to bail him out.

Fortunately, the complainant was suspicious and, rather than transfer any funds to the caller, attended police headquarters to verify the accuracy of the information in the call, ultimately confirming it was not true and that is was, indeed, a scam.

The suspects, police say, are “spoofing” phone numbers in order to make it look like the calls are coming either from the police or the number of a person known to the victim.

Similar scams have been reported by other police services in the region.

For example, in the case mentioned earlier, the suspects made it look as though the call was coming from her husband’s number, and the caller identified him to herself as police, giving the complainant a false name.

Police are warning residents not to fall prey to this scam, stressing that at no time do police make phone calls requiring “bail money” or funds required to pay a violation ticket.
