Burns Bog escape returns this Halloween

The Burns Bog Conservation Society is hosting its inaugural Halloween Bog Escape: Spectral Soldiers, an outdoor escape room-type experience.

Burns Bog Escape: Spectral Soldiers starts on Friday

After a successful pilot event in August, the Burns Bog Conservation Society is hosting its inaugural Halloween Bog Escape: Spectral Soldiers, an outdoor experience that takes the thrill of escape rooms and the chill of Halloween into the wilds of Delta, B.C.

Spectral Soldiers is a spooky adventure from the mind of society board member and escape room enthusiast Kirsty Peterson. After sneaking into Burns Bog on All Hallows’ Eve, participants encounter eight souls of World War II soldiers who were killed by bombs made from peat harvested from Burns Bog. Players must free the souls or risk being trapped there with them forever.

Despite its ghostly theme, Peterson said the escape is a family-friendly event that’s perfect for all ages.

“The escape games are more puzzle and problem solving than they are scary,” Peterson said. “There are no jump scares, but the bog can be creepy in the dark. Children will need to be accompanied by adults.”

Unlike traditional escape rooms where players are locked in a room with a set time limit, Spectral Soldiers is held in an open space with no time restrictions; players cannot lose unless they give up.

However, the fastest group of four to successfully “escape the bog” will win tickets and membership to Time Escape Games in Richmond.

Dara Peat, program co-ordinator with the Burns Bog Conservation Society, said she hopes to see people of all ages come out to this event and have fun.

“The Delta Nature Reserve is a beautiful place and a great place for you to explore the bog safely. The boardwalk that the Society has built throughout the reserve protects the sensitive environment, while giving everyone access to a wonderful piece of Burns Bog,” Peat said.

“It’s also kind of spooky at night and spiders build webs that just drape the bushes in the fall, so it’s really fun to explore in October.”

Burns Bog Escape: Spectral Soldiers starts on Friday, Oct. 28 and runs through Monday, Oct. 31 at the Delta Nature Reserve (10388 Nordel Court). Time-slots can be booked at bogescape.ca. All proceeds from this event go towards the Burns Bog Conservation Society.
