SURREY — The opening of a big Japanese household and consumer goods store on Vancouver’s Robson Street is being felt here in Surrey, too.

The flagship MUJI store, close to 14,000 square feet in size, is the company’s largest outside of Japan.

Bruce Ralston, MLA for Surrey-Whalley and B.C.’s Minister of Jobs, Trade and Technology, said the store opening “demonstrates strong confidence in the B.C. economy.

The store, which will open on Saturday morning (Dec. 2), will employ close to 150 people.

“Retail investment in B.C. continues to flourish, which means jobs for British Columbians, more choice for consumers and an exciting new shopping destination for locals and visitors,” Ralston stated in a government release on Friday.

In Japanese, the store name translates to “no-brand quality goods.”

According to the release, MUJI’s mandate for sustainability includes partnering with local suppliers. Surrey’s Burnaby Lake Greenhouses will supply the store’s plants. Other local suppliers include Ethical Bean Coffee and Raincoast Publishing.

Metro Vancouver’s first MUJI opened in August 2017, at Metropolis at Metrotown in Burnaby.

In Japan, the retailer was founded in 1980, and there are now six MUJI stores in Canada.
